As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to plan some spring adventures for dogs. Getting outside with your pup is a great way to enjoy nature, and it’s also excellent for fitting in exercise and bonding opportunities.
One of the best outdoor activities for pets is hiking, which allows your dog to explore new scents, terrains, and environments. If you’re thinking about hiking with your dogs this spring, here are some tips from True Care Veterinary Center to keep you and Fido safe on the trail.
4 Tips for Spring Hiking with Dogs
Choose the Right Trail
Not all trails are dog-friendly, so make sure you do your research before heading out. Look for trails in your area that allow pets and have pet-friendly amenities like doggy bag stations and water sources for pets.
Consider how fit your dog is, too. Some trails might be too steep or rocky for smaller or older dogs, for instance. Flat, short trails might leave your young, larger dogs aching for more adventure!
Pack the Essentials
Dogs need to stay hydrated and energized during hikes just like we do. So when you’re packing up snacks and water for yourself, include plenty of the same for your dog, too. Bring along a water bottle, collapsible bowl, and dog-friendly snacks to fuel your pup during the hike.
A first-aid kit for you and your pet, poop bags, and an extra leash are also must-haves for your to-bring list. And if your dog loves rolling around in the spring mud during hikes, bring a towel or pet-safe wipes for post-hike cleanup.
Play it Safe
Springtime brings warmer temperatures (finally!), but it also comes with unpredictable weather and an uptick in wildlife activity.
Keep an eye out for potential hazards like ticks, snakes, and toxic plants. Make sure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/tick prevention before you head out on the trail.
If your hike involves crossing streams or creeks, check the current before allowing your dog to enter the water. Spring rains and snowmelt can swell waterways up to dangerous levels. Check trail conditions on sites like AllTrails before you go!
And always, always check the weather before you leave the house. You may need to pack rain gear or extra layers, depending on the forecast.
Mind Those Manners
A dog that knows basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “leave it” makes hiking a lot less stressful, especially if you anticipate running into other dogs on the trail. Refresh those commands before your first spring hike, and make sure you follow all the hiking area’s rules.
If the area doesn’t explicitly say unleashed pets are welcome, keep Fido on a leash at all times. And always clean up after your pup! No one, not even other dog parents, wants to step in your pet’s mess.
