Even though consistently warm weather is still around the bend, it’s safe to say that winter’s grip is waning. With longer days and pleasant sunshine waiting for us outside, it’s time to spend more time exercising.
Dogs are always ready for more action, and spring is the best season to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle. Aside from nurturing the human-dog bond, exercise is a surefire way to achieve mental and physical well-being.
Let’s Get Moving!
Every dog has individual exercise and enrichment needs. Depending on your pup’s age, breed, weight, and overall health, they may need more or less daily exercise. Puppies and younger dogs seem to have an endless supply of bouncy enthusiasm for any outdoor activity, while older dogs may be satisfied with daily walks around the same, or similar, terrain or territory.

A wellness check is a great opportunity to identify what your dog needs this spring, and can help you figure out the best course of action. For example, an overweight dog may need both a diet and daily activity goals to reach a target weight. However, to reduce potential problems to their joints and ligaments, it’s necessary to provide only certain types of exercises or activities.
Likewise, until a dog is fully grown they may need guidance on exercises that won’t damage their changing musculoskeletal system. Growing puppies may also need additional calories to support changes to their daily exercise routines.
Remember your dog’s parasite prevention medication.
A Whole New World
Keeping it fresh is an important key to promoting dog exercise. Completely new sights and smells provide great mental workouts, and visiting an unfamiliar location makes the activity more interesting and enjoyable. Allow your dog to explore their surroundings before turning the focus to speed, distance, and the amount of steps. We recommend adding any of these elements to your spring workout routine:
- Scope out a new path or trail at least once a week
- Bring a long lead for them to safely roam while still attached to you in new areas
- Bring a toy like a Frisbee or ball along and add a fetch element to your time outdoors
- Add training to the mix by introducing new skills or commands while in public (don’t forget your clicker and treats)
- Find a group of other dogs and their owners that explore nature and/or workout together; this socialization is good for both of you
Dog Exercise Tips
When it comes to establishing and maintaining a healthy exercise routine, we recommend the following tips:
- Always bring fresh water
- Look for signs that your dog is tired; try not to push them too hard
- Take regular breaks
- Watch for any cuts, scrapes, or wounds on the paws; clear your dog’s feet of any plant matter, dirt, or debris following any exercise times
When visiting dog parks or designated off-leash areas, be sure to follow the posted rules. Wildlife may become more active in spring and should be avoided at all costs. Watch over your dog closely and have a plan to safely leave.
