Symptoms of pet allergies are not what you might think of when dealing with your own. Most dogs exhibit their allergies through skin problems, while cats have problems with their nose and paws. You may notice your pet scratching a lot more than usual, including rubbing the face and head on the furniture and carpet, along with chewing the legs and paws. In cats, runny nose and inflammation are common.
Clinical signs of pet allergies include:

- Coughing
- Itchiness
- Skin conditions, such as scaling, dryness, fur loss

Treatment and At Home Care
If you have noticed signs of allergies in your pet, the first step is to get an accurate diagnosis. Your veterinarian will do a thorough examination and perform allergy tests to determine what your pet is generally allergic to. In some cases, the allergies can be eliminated, such as with an allergy to a specific fungus or mold.
Sometimes, when allergies are more severe, your veterinarian will prescribe steroids or other medications to treat the more serious symptoms. In most cases, at home care is the key to reducing the problems associated with your pet’s seasonal allergies.
At home treatment may include:
- Frequent bathing
- Vacuuming often using a HEPA filter
- Using air filters throughout the home and a HEPA filter for the furnace/air conditioning unit
- Laundering your pet’s bed every few weeks, including bedding
- Eliminating carpet in lieu of tile or wood
- Reducing time spent outside during the blooming season
- Cutting weeds and long grasses in the yard
